Questioning the Segregation of the Migrant Community

The term ‘expat’ is entangled with positive assumptions of privilege and class, whereas the label ‘migrant’ somehow connotes something lesser: ‘expats come to bring, migrants come to get’.

But if both groups consist of people who moved away from their country of origin hoping to improve their quality of life, then what are the criteria we use to make the distinction and what are the consequences thereof?

De term ‘expat’ is verstrengeld met positieve aannames over privileges en klasse, terwijl ‘migrant’ vaak iets minderwaardigs suggereert: expats komen wat brengen, migranten komen wat halen.

Maar als beide groepen bestaan uit mensen die hun land van herkomst hebben verlaten in de hoop hun levenskwaliteit te verbeteren, welke criteria hanteren we dan om het onderscheid te maken en wat zijn daar de consequenties van?
